All welcome here!
Although this looks a LOT like a race picture, with an all black cast, I have to give the marketing people points to try to convince the cinema going public that they were seeing something GOOD and artistic, and put the whole race thing on the backburner. Heck, Id see something with Lena Horne in it!

Little Content, but Fun to Look at
Straightforward trailer for the all-black cast big-budget Hollywood musical. The graphic design of this has that wonderful 40s modernist look. Of interest is the fact that the two female stars, Ethel Waters and Lena Horne, are featured in the trailer, while the male star, Eddie ÂRochester Anderson is not mentioned at all!
Ratings: Camp/Humor Value: **. Weirdness: ***. Historical Interest: ****. Overall Rating: ***.

Magnificent musical, mediocre trailer
MGM deserves credit for making this movie, even allocating a respectable budget, but the patronizing attitude toward African-Americans is still obvious throughout. Nevertheless, the music is incomparable. Ethel Waters, Lena Horne, and Rex Ingram are featured, and Louis Armstrong shows up in a cameo. MGM knew that this would not be shown on screens in the South, so the fact that they gave this picture the standard MGM posh treatment, albeit with a rather racially insensitive script, deserves honorable mention.
I'm not sure what the specific shortcomings of this trailer are, but it doesn't really convey a sense of this film's true magnificence.
